It is a small crustacean that is the main source of food for whales. A recent study found that calanus colonies declined by up to 90 percent in parts of the Gulf of Maine. for that reason So whales migrate north in search of new food sources. This makes it difficult to prevent them. In 2017,Entangled: The Race to Save Right Whales from Extinction (2020)  right whales were recorded for the first time in large numbers in the Gulf of St. Lawrence in Canada. Twelve people died there. Many have been involved in fishing lines. In 2019, nine people died in Canadian waters.
